Domani Terminology and Definitions
for Freeholds, Glades, Haunts, and Refuges

Not many would know what you were talking about if you referred to a place or an area as either a freehold, glade, haunt, or Refuge. Domani Terminology isn't widely known. In the case of the National Register, here are the definitions for those terms, and explanations as to what each means.

"Freehold - Anyplace manmade that feels peaceful, natural, and sparks creativity and imagination. Someplace that feels magickal to the soul and the mind."
Essentially, a freehold is a man-made place of magick. This includes, but is not limited to, places of worship, stores that deal with magick and/or esoteric items, or any manmade place that sparks the imagination, feels magickal and makes one feel safe. The last bit depends largely upon the point-of-view, as there is magick everywhere.
Some examples of well-known freeholds are: Glastonbury Tor and the Chalice Well in England, and the Blarney Castle in Ireland. Some common freeholds can be libraries, museums, esoteric and metaphysical stores, or even a personal abode or home.

"Glade - Anyplace made by nature that feels peaceful, natural, and sparks creativity and imagination. Someplace that feels magickal to the soul and the mind."
The difference between glades and freeholds is that glades are, as the definition states, natural. For example, faerie circles or certain places in nature known for their mystical and/or sacred qualities. Such places can be found just about anywhere in the world.
Some examples of well-known glades are: Ayers Rock in Australia, and the Great Serpent Mound in America. Or, it could be a favorite beach or park.

"Haunt - A place where the Shroud is thin and the Restless Dead feel at home. Haunts are considered as being under the protection of the Dictum Mortum."
The nature of haunts makes them just about as common in the world as glades or freeholds. Haunts can be anywhere the Restless Dead make themselves known. They can be someone's home, an old store, or an historic battlefield. The most common haunts are cemetaries and graveyards. Also considering the nature of haunts, the Dictum Mortum plays a role in the upkeep and protection of these places, so the Knights of the Order of the Raven(for whom the Dictum Mortum is a prime directive) may also end up helping those of the Orders of Twilight's Hammer and the White Wolf from time to time.
Some well-known haunts are: The Gettysburg Battleground and Arlington National Cemetary, both in America. Naturally, graveyards and burial sites are haunts. Also, houses and buildings that are known for having ghostly activity.

Now, it's not uncommon to find places that are either glade/freehold, glade/haunt, freehold/haunt, or all three at once. Especially since many sites may have characteristicts that identify it as being either a freehold/glade, freehold/haunt, or glade/haunt. Sometimes, it depends on how big the area is and the aspects that identify it as either one, the other, two of each, or all three. In that case, you may find an entry will have two icons aside it to identify those characteristics. In the event that a site has characteristics of all three, you will see this icon aside it:

If help is needed in determining this, feel free to ask the Register.

Refuges, as defined in Article XII of the Arad Doman, are essentially large glades. No less than 33 miles wide from one side to the other. By size and nature alone, a Refuge can hold any number of glades, freeholds, or haunts,... but has to have a primarily magickal aspect to it for it to be considered for the List itself.
One such place that has been considered due to its place of importance in metaphysical belief and native folklore is the area surrounding Ayres Rock, in Australia. Because of its nature and the nature of the lands and rocks nearby and surrounding it, the entire park it lies in, along with a few more miles, has been designated by the Domain as a Refuge.
